Professional statement

Dr. Cyrano Patton is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, professor, and research director based in New York City and focused on helping adolescents and adults to live their best, most fulfilled lives. To achieve this, Dr. Patton works collaboratively with clients on a variety of goals, or even to develop goals for therapy in the first place.

Therapy sessions with Dr. Patton are personalized based on your desired style and experiences. An insight-oriented psychodynamic style can help us understand ourselves more deeply, including our emotions, our motivation, what brings us meaning in life, and how to center it. A skills-based Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) style can help us gain equilibrium with an emotional and interpersonal coping toolkit, alongside nonjudgmental mindfulness skills to both change and accept ourselves and our realities. Dr. Patton often blends these two: a relational psychodynamic approach that honors how our experiences and identities shape our values, patterns, and beliefs, with concrete DBT tips and skills to better understand our emotions, brain, identity, and relationships. This integrative approach has helped many clients find their footing in the life they craved, even people who have been let down by therapy in the past.

Having trained in five different hospitals and three different counseling centers across the country, Dr. Patton built a wealth of experience with diverse populations, and welcomes clients with any gender, sexual, ethnic, relationship, religious, or dis/ability identity.

As a seasoned telehealth provider, Dr. Patton offers the convenience of remote sessions to keep therapy accessible to you no matter where in New York you reside or work.

Message to clients

Feeling stuck, seeking a change, or wanting to understand something more deeply are some signs I could be helpful to you. Let's figure out what's getting in your way, and how to get through or around it. I work collaboratively with clients on a variety of goals, or even to develop goals for therapy in the first place. Then I’ll check in with you along the way to ensure we’re making progress, at any pace you like, whether a short-term or long-term model.

As a member of the LGBTQIAP+ community myself, working with clients who hold or wish to explore queer and/or transgender identities has always been close to my heart. I believe in cultivating a liberated space in which you can express your full self. How you feel in the “therapy room” is important, research shows that a good interpersonal fit between therapist and client is pivotal for reaching your goals, so it’s okay if you want to meet once to “shop around” for what’s right for you.

Whether you’d like deeper understanding, a more stable sense of self, or to break free from old patterns, and forge the ones you crave, I’d be delighted to support you on your therapy journey.
