Professional statement

Dr. Janet Kennedy is a clinical psychologist and the founder of NYC Sleep Doctor, a psychotherapy and consulting practice dedicated to addressing behavioral sleep disorders. With more than 20 years of specialized experience, Dr. Kennedy uses scientifically proven techniques to help her clients break out of the cycle of bad sleep, stop relying on sleep aids, and restore normal, healthy sleep patterns.

Dr. Kennedy uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), and evidence-based treatment protocol proven to be more effective and longer lasting than medication for treating insomnia and other behavioral sleep problems. Most of her clients see improvement within a few sessions. And, although CBT-I does not require in-depth psychotherapy or treatment/resolution of other mood or anxiety symptoms, some of Dr. Kennedy's clients stay on to work with her on those issues using CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and insight-oriented therapy and coaching.

Dr. Kennedy is based in New York City but practices exclusively via telehealth. This allows her to provide treatment to clients throughout New York State as well as New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida, where she is licensed to provide telehealth.

Message to clients

When sleep feels unpredictable--or predictably bad--everything in life feels harder. And sleep aids treat just the symptom--not the cause--of sleeplessness. I can help you re-program your sleep without overhauling your entire life. Working together, we will identify the changes needed to get your sleep back on track and we'll come up with a plan to maintain that healthy rhythm. We'll also work on resilience, so you you'll be able to bounce back quickly when you hit stressful periods in the future.

The CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) treatment program consists of an evaluation and 4-8 sessions. Treatment focuses on making behavioral changes to establish good sleep habits and teach you to fall asleep and return to sleep quickly. If you currently rely on medication to sleep, I will work with your prescribing doctor to safely discontinue sleep aids as your body learns to sleep naturally. Treatment then shifts to help you manage the anxiety that goes along with prolonged sleep problems--the feelings of dread as nighttime approaches, the anger and frustration, the thoughts about how difficult the next day will be after a night of poor sleep.

CBT-I is very focused and we won't need to dive too deeply into your other struggles to address your sleep. However, I do offer CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and insight-oriented therapy for those who want to work on issues beyond sleep in short-term therapy.
