She has received expert training and certification in CBT and ACT-based treatments for trauma, anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and relationship issues. Dr. Howell's professional experience includes serving as a predoctoral intern at the Lexington, KY VAMC, a postdoctoral resident at the VA Pacific Islands Healthcare System in Hawaii, a staff psychologist at the National Center for PTSD, and a staff psychologist and Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Co-Coordinator at the Charleston VA Medical Center. Further, Dr. Howell has received expert training in Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) and in several partner-assisted approaches for couples coping with PTSD, chronic illness, and caregiving dynamics.
Dr. Howell approaches every client with openness and curiosity--she believes everyone is unique and that treatment must be tailored to the individual for it to be effective. Successful therapy is a team effort between the therapist and the client--and as such, Dr. Howell prioritizes creating a comfortable environment where clear communication and trust are established. Dr. Howell has years of experience in implementing effective treatment in a virtual format, finding that it makes therapy more accessible for individuals with young children, busy jobs, and/or transportation limitations. She is based in Asheville, NC, licensed in NC and HI, and a member of PSYPACT, allowing her to provide virtual services individuals and couples living in 32 states of the U.S.
PLEASE NOTE: due to insurance credentialing rules, Dr. Howell can only accept insurance for patients living in NC and HI; patients in all other states are private pay. All couple therapy sessions are private pay regardless of location.

Insomnia & sleep issues - Exploring ways to improve sleep patterns, develop healthy sleep hygiene, master relaxation techniques, manage stressors, reduce worrying, and address insomnia
Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse
