Professional statement

Jonathan Newsum is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in Walnut Creek, CA. He works with clients of all ages, including couples, parents, and families with a passion for helping those with neurodivergence such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD, which may lead to issues in the workplace or at school. Jonathan also works with those with anxiety and those with attachment disorders, family conflict, and trauma.

Jonathan’s approach to therapy draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), two thoughts-based therapy modalities that focus on the role of thoughts and thought patterns in self-worth. Clients learn how to avoid the negative self-talk that can hold them back from feeling whole and happy. Jonathan also offers attachment-based family therapy, play therapy, and the Gottman Method to support the development of healthy bonding between partners and family members. He also practices somatic therapies like Brainspotting, offering a holistic approach to mental health and providing clients with comprehensive care.

Jonathan earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University and has over 20 years of experience as a therapist. He’s previously worked as a clinical program director, clinical supervisor, and professor, bringing this experience into his sessions with clients as he supports them through their mental health challenges.

Message to clients

Whether this is your first experience seeking therapy or you need a new therapist, I appreciate how frustrating the experience can be in finding a therapist you can trust for you and your family's needs. I offer a free 15-minute consultation to answer any questions you may have to ensure that the therapeutic experience will be the best fit for your needs.

I provide a concierge level of service. Concierge service means that I am readily available to support you and will make my best efforts to support you with all facets of the treatment process whether that means meeting with you at your home, attending an IEP meeting, assisting with connecting to other levels of care, supporting via phone or telehealth in crisis situations, scheduling an office appointment on short notice, helping you connect your child to the appropriate school setting, and/or providing training to extended family and other caregivers.

I consider it a privilege that you have considered me as the person to support you through these current challenges in your life. Therapy is all about relationships and it requires a high level of trust and vulnerability. You can rest assured that I will always provide the best of care from the first session through the last session and if you need new support in the future I will be there again.
