Kathy Avsar, PhD, LMHC is a Jungian Analyst and Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Birmingham, AL. Dr. Avsar specializes in helping clients better understand their thoughts, impulses, dreams, fears, and desires. Some of Dr. Avsar’s clients arrive at therapy disconnected from their thoughts and emotions, which can look like dissociation or psychosis. She works with clients who suffer from anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, complex PTSD, trauma, and grief. She also supports clients who would like to process through women’s issues, entrepreneurial struggles, and more.
Dr. Avsar’s approach to therapy draws from both her Jungian training and her PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience. She helps clients understand more about how their brain works, including how it adapts to change and how to build healthy habits. She also helps clients interpret their life through metaphor, myth, or stories to find more meaning. By taking a mind-body perspective, clients learn how to both calm their minds and their bodies to achieve a feeling of balance and calm. Dr. Avsar believes that one of the most important parts of therapy is the relationship built between the therapist and the client, so she strives to create a trusting, vulnerable atmosphere where both parties feel comfortable.
Dr. Avsar is a member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. She strives to practice culturally competent care with all of her clients, especially those from diverse backgrounds and identities. She dedicates herself to providing feminist, inclusive therapy services so clients can feel connected once more to their own lives.
