Professional statement

Prior to being a marriage therapist, Mr. Smith spent time working in the art world as a reproduction specialist as well as working one-on-one with art galleries around the world. his time in the non-clinical art world gave him a unique ability to resolve conflict & have better communication even across cultures and different faiths. He strives to remain always curious and to keep the system of the client as the focus during therapy.

Mr. Smith has five children, experienced adoption, step-family situations, divorce, new career changes, and the challenges of feeling good enough while resisting feeling like a failure at times. Life is not easy for anyone and he has stumbled a lot in his journey but the great thing is that while he did most of it alone, you do not have to go it alone. He feels a dedication to help others that are stuck in their life situations and avoid sitting in judgment or assigning shame or blame.

Mr. Smith believes that it is important to see the client for who they are, experts on their lives. And with that belief is also the belief that the client knows how to fix the situation but Mr. Smith is the expert on how to help the system, be it a marriage, relationship, family, or individual. The mind and body are forever connected while on this earth and while people strive to find earthly solutions, it is important to never discount that connection nor the connections everyone may seek as human beings.

Message to clients

This profile includes a 15-minute free consultation to see how we fit. The consultation does not constitute a therapeutic relationship. The therapeutic relationship begins after the intake paperwork and the first session are completed. There is no way to plan for my client schedule, but if you set up a time, I will do my best to keep that time, but it might be necessary to change the consultation time as needed. I do therapy a little differently because I see the world differently, I suppose. I want therapy to be serious, of course, but also to make it fun and discover things with my clients. I want to be curious in all situations because then I get to learn from all situations.

I must share life lessons of combinations of my client's histories with new and different clients. I never divulge who they are, and in many cases, they are a collection of clients that allow me to show some glimmers of hope. I am a spiritual person and believe that God exists, but I also recognize that religion is incredibly flawed and has the potential to do a lot of harm. I do offer Christian counseling, but I never bring the Bible into a session and never use religion to cause guilt for what decisions have been made. Therapy with me is a conversation and a connection that, when achieved, brings hope and health. You don't have to walk alone.

Specialties

Attachment issues - Attachment is the foundation for how we interact with those around us. We learn this from our family of origin and it is not always a good thing. Stable is always the goal vs. unstable attachments.

Couples counseling - Couples fight over many things and struggle to find resolution. The best way to find resolution is to talk about the feelings that put them at odds. It is never that simple though, is it?

Divorce & separation - Maybe the relationship you have is too damaged and others have moved on, I want you to feel supported in finding a new way to exist that has good attachments even though the wounds may be deep.

Premarital counseling - I do premarital and marital counseling the same way. I use prepare and enrich for both types of couples as a potential starting point. Premarital couples laugh a lot more.

Relationship issues - Relationship issues is a catch all because it goes beyond that of couples and includes families, step-families, and even friendships. The world is a complicated place that sometimes needs a nudge.

Infidelity - Infidelity is such a painful situation in a relationship. It requires the ability to see the humanity in each other as well as getting to a place where trust may exist again. It is possible, do you want to remain in the relationship?
