Professional statement

Laurie Stein is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Providence, RI. Since graduating with her Masters in Social Work from Hunter College, she has worked in a variety of outpatient settings, and has been in private practice since 1993.

Laurie works with adults of all ages and can provide different types of therapy for clients coming in with different needs and goals. She provides long term insight oriented therapy to help explore who you are, how you came to be who you are and who you would like to become.

She provides supportive therapy for clients going through transitions and changes whether positive or negative.

Laurie does EMDR which helps people who have had traumatic experiences which often affect how we view ourselves. EMDR can help you process the trauma and view yourself realistically and positively.

Laurie also works with couples who are feeling disconnected and stuck in the same negative cycle of interacting. She has had training in various modalities including Gottman, PACT and earned a certificate In Couples Therapy from the Psychodynamic, Couples and Family Institute of New England.

Laurie bases what she does on what you want and need. She can be eclectic and use various schools of thought with the same person. She uses psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thought, humanistic theory and elements of CBT as well as EMDR. In all of these modalities she believes an empathic, attuned relationship is crucial.

Message to clients

I think everyone should have a therapist stored away on a shelf who they can take down when they need to talk about what is going on in their lives. I provide a non-judgmental, warm and confidential environment. Being listened to and feeling understood is a basic human need. When that need is met we can develop a clearer sense of who we are, what we feel, think and need. We are then in a better position to make choices and be proactive.
I have been fortunate to work with a highly diverse population in a variety of clinical settings. My work is based on what the person needs and wants at the specific time in their lives.
