Professional statement

Elizabeth McFarland is a Therapist in Kingsport. She works with adolescents, adults, couples, and groups. Many of Liza’s clients come in to address issues related to self-image, identity, life transitions, depression, and anxiety. Liza is particularly passionate about serving adolescents and young adults. She also has advanced training in the area of generalized anxiety disorder, depression, trauma, and substance abuse.

Liza is trained in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness and art based therapies, in which time is spent exploring and understanding who clients are to better learn acceptance and develop individualized ways to manage symptoms. In session, Liza focuses on self-exploration, creative expression and mindfulness activities. This approach supports clients to understand themselves better and learn to love and accept all of themselves.

Liza's style is warm, engaging, and non-judgmental. When clients first start therapy, the focus is on building a collaborative relationship and creating a comfortable environment for clients to feel heard and understood.

Liza received her MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Georgia. She has worked at community clinics, doing in-home and in-office therapy with adolescents, adults, couples and groups. When not at the office, she enjoys spending time outside with family, doing yoga, attempting crafts, and reading or watching sci-fi.

Message to clients

Self-destructive behaviors (like binge eating, substance abuse, or self-harm), low self-esteem, and relationship issues are often signs that you feel lost or stuck in yourself and your life. Young adults and adolescents are especially prone to this kind of struggle and it is common for them to express feeling unheard and misunderstood by people in their lives. Do you feel you are totally lost in life? You are not alone! I would be honored to help you (or your child) get to know yourself and work to get unstuck so you can live a more fulfilling life!

I specialize in identity confusion, self-esteem issues, and self-destructive behaviors, especially in young adults and adolescents. I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Positive Psychology, cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT, DBT, TF-CBT), Gestalt, person-centered, and others based on each client's needs and preferences.

I like to bring fun and laughter into sessions! Clients have told me that I am easy to talk to and my direct nature helps them stay accountable to themselves. I work hard to get to know you and to understand your personal needs. I invite you to invest in yourself by calling or emailing me to set up a free consultation so we can work to get you unstuck!
