Professional statement

Mercy Burton Russell, LCSW, EDD is a clinical social worker licensed in Vermont and Arizona and available online. She works with adolescents, adults, couples and families. Many of Mercy’s clients come in when they are struggling in relationships at home or at work. They may be anxious, worried about addictions, their attention or performance. Some clients are grappling with the effects of traumatic events. Mercy is particularly passionate about the role of family relationships over the course of the lifespan. She has extensive experience and expertise in family and organizational relationship systems. Trained in neurofeedback and EMDR, she has a special interest in managing anxiety and optimizing performance.

In session, Mercy functions as a coach, providing information, perspective and strategies. This approach supports clients to make the changes they seek in their lives. Mercy’s brings a research attitude to her sessions. She wants to help you find out what you need to know and what works well for you. When a client first comes in, she will lead the sessions by listening to your concerns and asking questions that will provide a framework for understanding your strengths and best strategies. Mercy is dedicated to providing a relationship that is relaxed and professional.

Mercy received her clinical training at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA and in the Bowen Family Systems network. She studied educational policy and leadership at the University of Vermont. As an undergraduate she was pre-med and studied English literature at Carleton College. She is comfortable with many challenges due to the breadth of her experience in child and family therapy, EAP programs, addiction treatment, treatment of childhood sexual abuse and offenders, psychophysiology and many years in private practice with couples and individuals. Outside of private practice, Mercy enjoys her large family, many friends, travel and the outdoors.

Message to clients

I believe that relationships are the key to our wellbeing. We have equal needs to feel connected to others while maintaining our individuality and own life course. When this balance is disturbed we or our loved ones can develop symptoms. Likewise, a proper balance in relationships can restore us.

I function more as a coach than a traditional therapist. This is based on the modality of Bowen Family Systems Therapy. We will walk shoulder to shoulder exploring your dilemma and strategies that work for you. The first order of business is to address your anxiety about your problem. Once we have a larger perspective, I will be there to help you discover what works for you.

As troubled as you may be now, my hope for you is that you find our work together satisfying and enjoyable while you meet your goals.
