Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology, MA Psychologist, PhDDr. Dovala is a Los Angeles–based psychologist specializing in providing identity-affirming, evidence-based care for both individuals and couples/relationships.
Dr. Dovala holds a PhD and MA in Clinical Psychology from Clark University. She uses a strengths-based and integrative approach that is tailored to the unique needs of each client and draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT), and interpersonal modalities. Dr. Dovala takes an active approach to therapy that invites clients to approach their own life with deeper engagement and new possibility. Past clients have described her as genuine, nonjudgmental, and perceptive.
Dr. Dovala holds expertise in providing LGBTQIA+ and culturally-affirming care to both individuals and couples. She previously served on the Trans Care Team and LGBTQ+ Mental Health Team at UCLA, and has pioneered research on one of the first couples therapy interventions specifically tailored to the unique strengths and stressors that LGBTQ+ couples may experience. In addition to her own work, she supervises doctoral-level couples therapists and has trained over 300 providers across the U.S. and internationally in treating couples using the Relationship Checkup model. She continues to focus her practice on providing affirming care to clients with diverse gender identities, sexual orientations, and relationship practices (e.g. kink, polyamory/consensual non-monogamy).
Dr. Dovala offers both in-person and telehealth sessions with evening and weekend availability. She understands that beginning therapy can be a daunting process. If you are interested in using your insurance benefits for therapy, please know that I am considered an out-of-network provider; however, most PPO plans offer reimbursements for therapy around 40-80% of the fee.
