Professional statement

Valerie Owings is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor located in Kansas City, MO. She has over 10 years of experience supporting young children, teenagers, young adults, parents, and families. She specializes in helping families raise mentally healthy and happy children. This includes processing through major life transitions, emotional regulation, and developing a sense of purpose. Valerie’s clients learn how to improve their relationships, whether those are peer friendships, the relationship they have with their parents or child, or their romantic relationships.

Valerie’s younger clients benefit from play therapy, through which they can learn how to express complex emotions. Valerie teaches children how to manage distress, including feelings of fear and frustration. Through collaboration with parents, Valerie works with families to develop healthy, structured relationships, which can show behavioral benefits. The adults that Valerie works with also benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a thoughts-based therapy modality that strengthens positive thought patterns. Her sessions are empathetic, engaging, and poignant, as clients learn how to live mentally healthy lives. Valerie is also trained in sand tray therapy, a highly specialized form of therapy which helps individuals express their inner world without traditional talk therapy.

Valerie earned a Master’s degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City. She is certified in play therapy and is a member of the Association for Play Therapy.
