Professional statement

Abby Thompson is a psychotherapist working with individuals in New York and California, Abby’s clients seek help with disordered eating, social pressures, understanding their wants and needs, and getting what they want out of relationships and sex. Abby is particularly passionate about serving new parents and young professionals. She is particularly sought out for her body-neutral, sex- and pleasure- positive, supportive approach to disordered eating and the transition to parenthood.

Abby's training is in somatic (body-based), relational, and mindful approaches. Her practice is science-informed, goal oriented, and flexible. In session, Abby uses the client's moment-to-moment experience to deeply understand and transform emotions. Feelings in the body, and the therapeutic relationship, can be powerful tools to access a state of calm, centered and confident.

Abby's style can be described as gently supportive yet direct and challenging. Humor and levity are just as welcome in the therapy session as the more difficult emotions- and both can lead toward positive transformation. She supports clients in setting and working toward meaningful, realistic goals.

Abby received her Masters degree from the California Institute of Integral Studies, where she currently supports emerging therapists as a clinical supervisor. She has over a decade of experience in private practice settings, Abby continuously trains in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy and sex therapy. Outside of therapy, she enjoys science fiction and fantasy (both books and TV), exercising, a continuous rotation of creative pursuits, and exploring the city with her husband and daughter.

Message to clients

I'm glad you're here! I know how frustrating it can be to try to find a therapist who really "gets" you, who makes you feel hopeful and confident that you can reach your goals. If you've gotten this far on the page, you're probably wondering if I'm that therapist for you- the best way to find out is to chat for a few minutes, so go ahead and book a call or send a message.

A lot of my clients find starting therapy a little easier if they have an idea what will happen, so here's a rough map: On the intro call, we are just figuring out if we "click" and if I can help, and if we agree, set up a time to meet. In our first session, we are getting to know each other and thinking together about what you would like to achieve- what would make therapy be a really awesome choice for you. Once we've got that down, most sessions are focused on your real-time thoughts and feelings, as I've found that's the most effective way to achieve your goals.

To me, fixing what feels wrong is just the start. It's about building lifelong skills to be present with yourself and others, and taking action to build a life that allows you to thrive exactly as you are. I look forward to being your guide along that path!
