Abby Thompson is a psychotherapist working with individuals in New York and California, Abby’s clients seek help with disordered eating, social pressures, understanding their wants and needs, and getting what they want out of relationships and sex. Abby is particularly passionate about serving new parents and young professionals. She is particularly sought out for her body-neutral, sex- and pleasure- positive, supportive approach to disordered eating and the transition to parenthood.
Abby's training is in somatic (body-based), relational, and mindful approaches. Her practice is science-informed, goal oriented, and flexible. In session, Abby uses the client's moment-to-moment experience to deeply understand and transform emotions. Feelings in the body, and the therapeutic relationship, can be powerful tools to access a state of calm, centered and confident.
Abby's style can be described as gently supportive yet direct and challenging. Humor and levity are just as welcome in the therapy session as the more difficult emotions- and both can lead toward positive transformation. She supports clients in setting and working toward meaningful, realistic goals.
Abby received her Masters degree from the California Institute of Integral Studies, where she currently supports emerging therapists as a clinical supervisor. She has over a decade of experience in private practice settings, Abby continuously trains in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy and sex therapy. Outside of therapy, she enjoys science fiction and fantasy (both books and TV), exercising, a continuous rotation of creative pursuits, and exploring the city with her husband and daughter.
