Professional statement

Bethany Merold is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Ohio. She works with adults with a wide range of clinical concerns. Bethany's clients often struggle with issues surrounding trauma and other experiences that negatively influence their identity, self-worth, and attachment style. She specializes in treating PTSD, borderline personality disorder, and neurodivergence including ADHD and adult autism since these issues often result in distortions in how one views themselves.

Bethany's approach to treatment is founded on the perspective that all thoughts, feelings, and behaviors serve a purpose for our continued functioning. When they are no longer necessary for functioning, they naturally resolve themselves. Therefore, to treat symptoms, Bethany uses therapies that heal the underlying issues that make them necessary to begin with. This approach provides permanent healing and removes the shame and struggle many clients feel with treatments that require them to fight against their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

To accomplish these goals, Bethany relies on Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). In IFS, Bethany guides clients to get to know the parts of themselves that try to protect them and help them function. She helps clients to heal any emotional burdens that may be causing these parts to serve their role in a dysfunctional way. EMDR assists and amplifies this process by using bilateral stimulation to activate the way our body naturally heals psychological issues and remove any barriers to healing.

A graduate of The Ohio State University and Ashland Theological Seminary, Bethany has enjoyed being a therapist for more than 7 years. She worked in various counseling settings prior to starting her own practice in 2023. Seeing the profound impacts IFS has had in her clients' lives renewed her passion for counseling, and amplifies her desire to help people heal every day.

Message to clients

One of my greatest joys is to see people heal emotional wounds, learn to love and value themselves, and build a life that they love living. As a therapist, my role is to help guide you through the healing process in the most effective and empowering way possible. I believe counseling, though inherently challenging, should have as much ease and compassion as possible. This is why I prioritize treatment strategies that work with your natural healing mechanisms rather than forcing you to constantly fight against your thoughts and feelings or rigidly implement coping strategies. I prefer to avoid strategies that only treat symptoms, and have the potential to increase feelings of hopelessness or shame. My goal is to help you compassionately heal the root issue so the unwanted thoughts, feelings, or behaviors are no longer necessary. When the underlying wounds are healed, the symptoms naturally resolve themselves leading to a drastically improved life in the easiest way possible.

I look forward to helping you fall back in love (or for the first time!) with yourself and your life!
