Professional statement

Melodie works primarily with the family and friends of folks struggling with substance use. There are lots of therapists who help clients navigate addiction and recovery. Melodie works with their partners, their children, or their friends: the people who are often left to manage the wreckage that comes with substance abuse. The people who love a person battling addiction and who are also suffering themselves. The people who don't know if they're helping or enabling, who aren't sure if they want to stay or if they need to go. The people who feel like they can't take it anymore.

Melodie specializes in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR and ACT therapies are structured, targeted and they deliver. Melodie's approach to addiction is grounded in CRAFT: Community Reinforcement And Family Training - an evidence-based intervention that helps family and friends develop effective strategies to help their loved one who is struggling with addiction and also to feel better about themselves.

Counseling is not Melodie's first career (nor her second), and she brings with her a wealth of experience, having worked with many different people, in many different places. Melodie comes by her expertise honestly - she's walked the walk and done the hard work of change.

Melodie also works with clients experiencing anxiety, including social anxiety, loneliness and social isolation; imposter syndrome and burnout; self-esteem concerns; health difficulties like infertility and postpartum depression; and lack of vitality and purpose.

Message to clients

The most important question clients ask me regarding my work with addiction and substance use: Can things change if my loved one isn't willing to change? YES!

I believe change is possible.

What you can expect in our sessions: I start by first seeking to understand your circumstances in all their complexity, what is happening for you, what you might have tried to alleviate pain and suffering, and evaluate how well these strategies have worked. We’ll hold on to the things that work. Next, we will explore your values, what makes life worth living, and what goals we might set in therapy that line up with those values. Finally, we move into the action phase, so you can start making real change and build the life you want.

I am here to empower you to break cycles of trauma and suffering, to help you reconnect with creativity, joy and delight, and to enable you to build a rich and meaningful life.

I sincerely believe that the change you want is possible and I believe that therapy can help you get there. I’m here to walk the path with you, with warmth, compassion, understanding and great hope.
