Professional statement

Penelope Yates, LCSW is a New York City-based therapist with an integrative practice that focuses on providing focused, research-backed interventions for trauma, anxiety, depression and life transitions. She provides in-person sessions in New York City and Westchester County, and remote sessions for clients based in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Penelope is a highly interactive therapist who believes that therapy is the most effective when the therapist and client develop a trusting therapeutic relationship, and are aligned in a shared understanding of the client's goals and how to achieve them.

Penelope has been in practice for over a decade and has trained under some of the industry's leading experts on trauma treatment. Prior to founding her own practice, she served as Director of Trauma Treatment at the Child and Family Institute, and as a staff therapist at the Center for Traumatic Stress at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she was supervised by Drs. Judith Cohen and Anthony Mannarino, the developers of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Penelope's practice offers evidence-based approaches to trauma, depression, and anxiety. She is a certified provider of EMDR, TF-CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy. She employs humor, creativity, and level-headedness in her work with teens, adults, and the LGBTQ+ community. Sessions can be a highly structured experience with specific goals and research-backed skills taught, as well as a space for clients to explore at their own pace.

Message to clients

With each passing year, I become increasingly grateful for the litany of purposes therapy can have for a person, and the many ways that therapy can be: a refuge in a time of crisis; a classroom to learn (or re-learn) skills to more adaptively cope; a safe space for expansion and growth from past hurt; and a protected time for self-exploration and discovery. I am honored, as a therapist, to serve as your partner in curiosity and growth.

Clients tell me that while my warmth, curiosity and breadth of experience are what attract them to my practice, what keeps them engaged in therapy with me is their trust in my dedication to their care, and my willingness to adapt my approach to better serve their needs. While my approach is grounded in research-proven modalities and techniques, my background in the performing arts also helps me to be creative and adaptable as a therapist. Sessions with me can be a structured experience focused on using specific skills or interventions to attain a goal, as well as an open, inclusive space for clients to explore at their own pace.

I am humbled by the capacity of the human spirit to grow, change, and thrive even in the midst of great adversity. If you choose to place your trust in me as a therapist, know that I take this very seriously, and will be your dedicated advocate.
