Professional statement

Shira is an attachment-based psychotherapist and mindfulness educator who is deeply committed to helping people integrate traumatic experiences, adversity and dysfunctional relationships into secure, resilient narratives. With over 15 years of clinical experience, Shira has extensive training in Emotion Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, mindfulness meditation and interpersonal neurobiology.

Shira's work with couples and individuals centers around uncovering the scaffolding of habitual conflict, co-dependency, and complex trauma. Shira also has a special focus on treating attachment injuries in adult children of severely mentally ill parents (who suffer with borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and narcissistic personality disorder).

As the daughter of a treatment-resistant schizophrenic mother, Shira found her way to psychology with the imperative to make meaning out of her own traumatic experiences as a child and to support adults recover from the legacy of insecure relationships.

Shira is currently available for online therapy sessions but maintains an office in Santa Monica.

Message to clients

Despite all of our best intentions, love is not enough to sustain a long term relationship. It can be especially difficult for people who grew up in families where healthy relationships either never existed or were in short supply. When you get caught in the frustration of perpetual problems and gridlock, it can be profoundly helpful to bring in a guide that can offer you not only a new perspective, but someone who can illuminate the unconscious patterns at a play—and set a clear path forward.

My mission is to give you mindfulness-based, practical tools, and tangible insights for repairing and re-building resilient relationships. Often times we can mistake the authenticity of a difficult emotional experience as an objective truth about ourselves or our relationships. Mindful awareness and compassion can help us learn how to be in conversation with those emotions. It can also give us the space to become curious about what habitual stories we are telling ourselves over and over again.

My approach helps clients to identify and uproot deeply entrenched negative patterns that shape how they see themselves and the world --and empowers them to redeem both their relationships and life stories. My integrative approach is also grounded in my training in Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method for Couples alongside mindfulness-based techniques to promote insight, resilience, and well being.

When you’re in crisis with a problem that needs immediate attention, the thought of spending many sessions getting to know your therapist can feel daunting and frustrating. While it’s absolutely critical to building trust with a compassionate and collaborative therapist, it’s also important to get to the root of the problem, put it into a new framework, and identify practical tools to help you move forward and heal.
