Professional statement

Sonia Gomes is a licensed clinical social worker based in Providence, RI. Sonia works with individual adults, across the lifespan with a focus on professional adults. Many of her clients have found great success in their careers and/or academically, but struggle to feel connected in their relationships or at peace in their daily lives. Sonia is particularly sensitive to people facing moments of transition, like a move, breakup, or loss. During these existential challenges a delicate balance begins to tremble, and symptoms of anxiety, depression or self doubt can emerge.

She offers sessions in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Sonia's approach in rooted in mindfulness and other evidence based practices that help explain how behaviors, thoughts, and emotions are interconnected.

Sonia is certified in CSRT (Core Self Reclamation Therapy), AEDP, level 1, trained in EMDR, Certified in Core Energetics a Somatic therapy, trained in Mindfulness, Mindfulness Self Compassion, and subsequent trainings in IFS (Internal Family Systems), and Ego State therapy.

Prior to private practice, Sonia worked in hospital and community settings, including Rhode Island College where she currently teaches in the Master's Level program.

Message to clients

Welcome. Do you find yourself struggling, feeling stuck? Maybe you experience feelings of overwhelm, or have thoughts of not being good enough. Do you feel misunderstood, or have difficulty communicating your needs. Maybe you feel as if you have lost your way, comparing yourselves to others; at times feeling disconnected from others. Here, you will have the opportunity to connect, experience being seen, in a safe, welcoming, inclusive, environment. We will explore your internal world and understand your relationships with others and with yourself. Together we will explore these experiences and create change. The journey is one from self blame to self compassion.

Change is created with the use of multiple modalities, and a holistic approach. As a regular practitioner of meditation, and self compassion I integrate mindfulness and inner strength training. With the use of multiple mind body practices I hone in on the nervous system, and your natural ability to self regulate. Together transformation happens.

There is a mountain of evidence showing that negative beliefs, which are limiting, can be transformed. You are not alone. Know that together we will build connection, renew a purpose, experience feeling whole, creative, nurtured and grounded. Transforming these beliefs allow for a more full, spontaneous, creative and satisfying life.

Professional endorsements

"I would most heartily recommend Sonia for working in Zencare. Sonia is an exceptional therapist with many years of working with a wide variety of populations- including age, gender, health status, sexual orientation, and non-English speaking individuals. Sonia is dedicated to her own internal work, so as not to interfere with her client’s development, which is a gift to her clients. Sonia is also interested in a variety of modalities, holistic in nature, which helps her bring a bigger toolbox to her clients. Sonia is, simply, a very good therapist, dedicated to her craft, willing to grow in service to her clients and her own awareness."

- Joanna Meriwether, MSW • June 2017

"I have found Sonia to be fearless and completely authentic in her own work. I believe a therapist can only take a client as far as she/he is willing to go. Sonia does not shy away from the “tough stuff” and is a compassionate advocate."

- Kathleen Welcome, fellow student • June 2017

"Sonia provides therapy that is clinically sound, highly ethical, and culturally competent."

- Laurice Girouard, LICSW • February 2017
