She is seeing patients throughout California through online video visits. She works with women throughout the life cycle and specializes in working with patients who are struggling with depression, anxiety and insomnia throughout pregnancy and postpartum as well a pre-conception planning for patients who want to optimize their psychiatric medications for pregnancy.
Dr. Hwang provides both medication management in conjunction with your weekly therapist and combined weekly medication management and psychotherapy. She is trained in psychodynamic therapy, which is a long-term therapy focused on uncovering your patterns and behaviors, considering their origins, and helping you to understand what makes you behave and react in the ways that you do. In understand and making these connections, we can move beyond them controlling your decisions and instead allow you to have agency of your own life.
Dr. Hwang completed her undergraduate training at the University of Pennsylvania where she graduated magna cum laude with an honors in biology. She then completed her medical school training at the University of Southern California (USC) where colleagues elected her to the Gold Humanism Honor Society (awarded to "colleagues who you would want taking care of your own family"). After that, she completed her psychiatry residency training at University of California San Diego (UCSD) where she also completed a Chief Residency year and training at the UCSD Women's Reproductive Mental Health Clinic.
Women's issues - Therapy tailored to common concerns among women; providing a safe and understanding space to address life challenges, stressors, and questions around identity as a woman
Depression - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life
Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)
Pregnancy, perinatal, postpartum mental health - Addressing issues specific to women and families during the pregnancy and postpartum period, including postpartum depression and anxiety
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder - Support developing and implementing strategies to cope with extreme emotional distress and mood shifts related to one’s menstrual cycle
Postpartum depression - Coping with persistent feelings of sadness, exhaustion, and/or being overwhelmed after the birth of a child; developing strategies for more positive thought patterns and behaviors.
