Hi, I’m Melanie Van Orden, and I’m a psychotherapist and professional life coach in New York City. I offer psychotherapy to clients that reside in New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Florida. I offer life coaching, trauma recovery coaching, and psychedelic integration coaching to clients worldwide.
I specialize in working with people who are creative and sensitive, but often struggle with issues surrounding self-worth and meeting their own needs. These individuals frequently prioritize being liked, accepted, and approved of, which can hinder their ability to express their true selves and pursue their genuine desires. Additionally, they tend to be overly critical of themselves, burdened by feelings of shame, blame, and guilt.
The clients I work with are also often facing professional transitions from unfulfilling careers, navigating romantic relationship issues (such as finding new love or leaving unhealthy partnerships), or dealing with grief and loss. I also address deeply personal issues, including questioning the belief systems they were raised with or leaving high-demand groups or cults. I also have expertise in working with queer clients on LGBTQIA+ concerns, helping individuals affected by narcissistic abuse, and assisting my clients in their recovery from love addiction or sex addiction.
No matter what you are currently grappling with, my goal is to assist you to accelerate your healing and growth through a combination of trauma-informed, somatic or body-based practices, and for those that are interested and when it’s appropriate, psychedelic-assisted therapy.
If this resonates with you, I encourage you to reach out and schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation. Let's embark on this transformative journey together.
Career counseling - Support around personal and professional growth; clarifying career goals and implementing steps toward building a fulfilling career and meaningful work-life balance.
Existential crisis & challenges - Supportive exploration of meaning and purpose in one’s life; finding one’s path in the face of existential anxiety, dread, and feelings of meaninglessness.
Love addiction - Love addiction creates fixations and compulsions in love interests and can cause desperation or uneasiness when you are away from your lover or sexual partner. Love addicts often find themselves unable to stop seeing a specific person even though they know that seeing that person is destructive to them. It can also result in divorce, affairs, poor job performance, relationship conflict, poor concentration of everyday tasks, enmeshment, clinginess, and extreme emotional highs and lows.
Religious trauma recovery - Religious trauma occurs when a person's religious experience is stressful, degrading, dangerous, abusive, or damaging. Traumatic religious experiences may harm or threaten to harm someone's physical, emotional, mental, sexual, or spiritual health and safety.
Sex addiction - Sex addiction causes a person to lose control over their sexual thoughts and urges. They may compulsively change their day-to-day routine to be able to perform sexual acts and feel out of control when it comes to these decisions, even if they're aware of the negative consequences. They may also suffer from obsessive sexual thoughts, feel shame or depression regarding their sexuality, masturbate excessively, engage in risky sexual behavior, or struggle with compulsive infidelity.
Recovery from cults and high demand groups - Cult recovery can refer to the process of healing from the psychological and spiritual abuse that can occur in cults. Some characteristics of cults include: unreasonable fear of the outside world, a belief that former followers are always wrong in leaving, and a belief that the group or leader is always right.
