Professional statement

Cynthia Longino is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in North Hollywood, CA. Cynthia specializes in helping individuals move past a sense of being “stuck” in their lives. This includes being stuck in unhealthy relationships and friendships, moving past creative blocks, and finding purpose and fulfillment in daily life. Unresolved trauma, frequent and ongoing anxiety and depression, blocked recovery and untreated addiction can also lead to a feeling of being "stuck", and resolving these can lead to a renewed sense of purpose and joy in life. Cynthia helps clients to make meaningful and lasting changes in their outlook, self-esteem, and self-care so that they can start living the life that they want.

Cynthia practices an evidence-based therapy modality called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which helps place the painful memories often associated with trauma in the past in perspective, so clients can "move on" to lives free of unnecessary suffering and repetition. She also teaches clients grounding techniques and mindfulness exercises which can be used in moments of distress, as well as to increase feelings of safety, calm, and presence in one's life. She empowers clients to leave behind excessive worrying, harmful thoughts, and self-doubt.

Cynthia earned a Master’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles, and has post-graduate training in grounding and mindfulness practices, Motivational Interviewing, and EMDR. She creates a space where clients can transform through self-compassion, understanding, and an increased sense of connection in the world. She seeks to build close rapport and trust with each client as they journey along their path.

Message to clients

If you are feeling like there is little or no movement in your life, if you've tried unsuccessfully to change long-standing patterns, or feel like you should just "get over it (whatever "it" is)" and move on, you owe it to yourself to really take your own pain seriously, and give therapy- especially a modality like EMDR- a try. Pain is a signal from our bodies and nervous system that we need to make a change. But it's not a clear signal, is it? And when we're in distress, it can be hard to know what kind of change is needed. I can help interpret those signals, and apply interventions that help you find your way out of that confusing stew of worry and hurt.

Our initial work focuses on developing trust and a sense of how we will collaborate, identifying the goals of treatment, and building resources to increase a sense of calm and resilience in your life to prepare for reprocessing. Maybe counter-intuitively, reprocessing is generally an intuitive, mind/body-centered process, focused more on experiencing how the past shows up in the present than on revisiting your history- people often say that with EMDR, they can process in hours or days what might take them weeks or months in regular talk therapy. What follows is usually an increased sense of clarity and ability to manage life's daily ups and downs with presence, equanimity, and joy in the process.
