Professional statement

Dr. Max Maisel is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in Redondo Beach. Dr. Maisel offers morning, daytime, evening, and weekend appointments. He sees clients in person or through teletherapy when appropriate. He specializes in using mindfulness and other evidence-based therapeutic approaches to help people heal from anxiety disorders, overwhelming stress, OCD, and depression. His approach is gentle, warm, and active in the therapy room. In addition to his private practice, he does contract work for residential treatment facilities to provide anxiety and OCD treatment to clients needing more specialized help. He is also passionate about providing training seminars and supervision to psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows.

Dr. Maisel takes an integrative approach to therapy, and will tailor the treatment to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual client. He has extensive experience utilizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Self-Compassion, and Interpersonal Therapy. His approach aims to help clients change their relationship with negative thinking patterns and painful emotions in the service of building a rich and meaningful life. For clients with OCD or panic disorder, treatment will typically be integrated with exposure and response prevention (ERP), which is considered the "gold standard" therapeutic modality for OCD and panic.

Dr. Maisel has worked with diverse clients across many different settings, including university counseling centers, medical clinics, and hospitals. He has trained at sites which value multiculturalism and diversity, and he acknowledges the importance of his client's intersecting identities and unique family and cultural backgrounds. He values meeting people where they are and appreciates holding space for the complexity and uncertainty in life.

Message to clients

Your anxiety is like an opponent who knows you well, and is skilled at keeping you stuck. When you have anxiety or OCD, what feels like the right thing to do usually makes us feel even worse in the long-term. I will help you gain insight into the ways anxiety is misleading you and teach you methods to gain the upper hand. There are so many different helpful tools, such as learning mindfulness skills to step outside of negative thinking spirals, changing the way you experience uncomfortable sensations in your body, and practicing ways to empower yourself by gently and systematically facing your fears. I have years of experience helping people overcome their anxious suffering. In addition to working with hundreds of clients, I have published research on anxiety treatment in peer-reviewed journals and have attended numerous workshops, conferences, and trainings. In our work together, you’ll gain a deep understand of the brain’s role in maintaining your anxiety symptoms, and how to access parts of your brain that will promote healing and relief. You’ll learn how to change your relationship with worry, panic, and anxiety for good, so they no longer hold you back from living the life that you want.
