Professional statement

Sara Nevius is a psychotherapist in Oakland. She works with adults of all ages and adolescents. Many of Sara's clients come in to address overwhelming feelings of anxiety, depression, challenges with life transitions, grief, or navigating difficulties with relationships. She also has advanced training in the area of substance use and addiction.

Sara approaches therapy with a psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive, and internal family systems lens. Sara believes that when we better understand how our histories have affected us, we're better equipped to navigate our present lives. Sara believes the relationship with the therapist is often the most healing aspect, but that that mindful breathing, journaling, and dream interpretations can aid and support the therapeutic process. This approach supports clients to feel more relaxed, comfortable in their authentic, unique selves and have greater capacity and confidence to tolerate challenges and transitions throughout their life.

Sara's style is warm, attentive, deeply curious and at times, direct. When clients first start therapy, the focus will be to develop a relationship that feels safe, collaborative, open, and curious.

Sara received her Masters in Clinical Psychology from San Francisco State University. She works at H.A.A.R.T. Hayward, an outpatient medication-assisted treatment program for people addicted to opioids. Outside of private practice, she enjoys reading, hiking, and when safe, traveling to explore different lifestyles and cultures. Sara offers both in-person and remote therapy sessions.

Message to clients

I see psychotherapy as a space to get to know yourself more deeply- it doesn't have to be a place where you only tap into suffering. By developing a collaborative relationship, we will foster curiosity and investigate who you are. We may uncover ways you may be holding yourself back from living a more prosperous, fuller life. Whether it's anxiety, depression, addiction, or difficulties with intimacy, we'll investigate the process together, find ways to recover, and get back to you. Strong and supportive relationships can transform us; therapy can be one of them. Wherever you are, I would be honored to support you in your process.
