Professional statement

Who meshes well with Andrew’s practical approach, derived from his background as a former practicing attorney? Here are some examples.

Those who:

  • Do a lot of thinking;
  • Tend to get stuck in their thoughts;
  • Sometimes push themselves too hard;
  • Want to make therapy concrete and useful.

Who else? Those who:

  • Grew up in a household that emphasized achievement;
  • Grew up with overly-critical parents;
  • Want to optimize their relationships, with more constructive communication;
  • Want their work to be meaningful, contributing to the social good in some way;
  • Are working to manage stress, and achieve that elusive work-life balance;
  • Would love to figure out what this “adulting” thing is really all about.

Andrew’s approach is science-based. When we interact with coworkers, friends, family members or significant others, things like implicit memory and the amygdala are running the show. Andrew helps clients understand how they’re wired, what’s happening inside in moments of stress, and how to manage it all.

It’s also an evidence-based approach. With couples, Andrew utilizes PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) to help identify how they’re each “wired” with regard to relationships, and how to get their needs met. With individuals, he blends EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with Internal Family Systems Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, attachment theory, and mindfulness-based practices.

Andrew is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, an EMDRIA-Certified EMDR Therapist, and a TBHI-Certified Telebehavioral Health Practitioner. His office is located at 870 Market Street in San Francisco, in the historic Flood Building. Sessions are by video or in-person for California residents, and by video for Colorado residents.

Message to clients

Hey, welcome! Finding the right therapist ain’t easy. Alas, the endless scroll has led you here.

Definitely not your typical therapist. Want proof? Check out my website. You won’t see photos of ponds with piles of rocks. The therapist jargon is kept to a minimum. Very little of that woo-woo language to be found.

Why? Because therapy’s supposed to be useful and practical. I believe that real change isn’t possible when warmth and support is *all* you get. That’s necessary, but not sufficient. My approach is interactive and actionable. We’ll be developing insights, identifying patterns, and replacing those patterns. You’ll be prompted to take stuff from therapy and actively think about it, try things, practice things, and actually implement them in your everyday life. The goal is for you to be feeling more content and less stressed ASAP. Improving your relationships, feeling more like yourself, and just generally optimizing your life. Let’s do this!
