Professional statement

Julia Baum is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Brooklyn, NY specializing in working with adults in their 20s and 30s as they navigate the challenges of depression and anxiety. With a background in the arts, Julia has a deep understanding of the ups and downs creative people face. She welcomes a wide range of creative professionals and entrepreneurs to her practice.

Julia has extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), a form of CBT. Her sessions are goal-oriented and solution-focused. She teaches clients how to problem-solve in the moment, increasing understanding of their thinking patterns and how these thoughts trigger unhelpful emotions and behaviors. Clients learn how to respond to these thoughts in a helpful, logical way instead.

Julia is a creative thinker, and skillfully draws from both the most up-to-date therapeutic research and ancient understandings of mindfulness to help each client engage with their most authentic self. Her office is located in Williamsburg, a short walk from the Marcy Ave subway station.

Message to clients

You didn’t come this far, to only come this far. Let's work together to help you bounce back and get going again. I firmly believe in the wise words of the philosopher, Epictetus, who said, ‘It is not what happens to you but, how you react to it that matters.’ My practice offers the highest quality, evidence-based therapy in combination with philosophy, and mindfulness techniques to help you get un-stuck.

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Depression - Providing support and promoting healing through hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life

Self-esteem - Cultivating self-compassion, assertiveness, and confidence; developing ways to reduce suffering, anxiety, social withdrawal, and self-neglect

Career counseling - Support around personal and professional growth; clarifying goals and steps to building a fulfilling career and meaningful work-life balance

Entrepreneurs - Supportive coaching and stress management skill-building for startup founders, early team members at a growing startup, business owners, and freelancers

Creative professionals - Understanding of highly creative minds; goal setting related to the artistic and creative process; support finding meaningful balance in one’s life for architects, visual, and performing artists
