Professional statement

Emily Shaw is a Columbia and Georgetown trained mental health provider. Shaw brings years of experience working with a wide range of individuals in both academic and private treatment centers.

Emily has worked extensively with children through young adults struggling with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Her particular sub-speciality is working with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and reproductive mental health --- including psychotherapy and medication management in the pre and postnatal period.

Shaw begins all of her new patient relationships with an extensive consultation period to allow her to hear and understand an individual’s motivations and needs in seeking treatment. Further, she emphasizes comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s overall mental health before providing treatment recommendations.

Shaw’s treatment strategy balances the biological with the psychological and social factors contributing to an individual’s struggles. For example, she emphasizes exploring all treatment recommendations --- including evidence-based mental health medication, psychotherapy and lifestyle changes.

Message to clients

Great job making it this far! Reaching out for mental health treatment is almost always a big step for someone. I believe getting to know you as a person, not just as a patient is an important part of a successful therapeutic alliance. If we work together, I will strive to generate a comfortable sharing environment for you --- allowing us to work collaboratively and towards a healing and personal growth process.

While I prescribe medication for many conditions, it’s only one aspect of my approach --- I believe strongly in the power of psychotherapy and it’s my goal to help patients better understand themselves.
