Professional statement

Dr. Howard Chavis is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist practicing on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. He sees children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and seniors. He specializes in a wide range of problems including anxiety, depression, fear, anger management, relationships, parenting concerns and career challenges. Though he is able to prescribe medication, his approach generally allows for improvement without the need for medication.

Dr. Chavis takes a multimodal approach to treatment, including the implementation of mind-body techniques when appropriate. At initial consultation, he gains an understanding of what brings the person to therapy and identifies what interferes with their being more in touch with their true feelings and more effective in their relationships. He helps people see and then free themselves up from the inflexible, counterproductive ways they protect themselves. He accomplishes this through the alleviation and elimination of characterological and muscular armor (see video).

Dr. Chavis has four decades of experience and cares about those he treats. He received his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His office is conveniently located near the 96th Street subway station.

Message to clients

I help people see and experience that there is more to life.

Anxiety - Identifying and resolving the root causes of worry, nervousness, or stress, disabling discomfort in social settings (social anxiety), and sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder). This may include work on the couch (see video for a more in-depth explanation).

Depression - Identifying and resolving underlying difficulties that lead to depression, a symptom of being emotionally “stuck.” By mobilizing the individual, hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life can be reversed.

Relationships - Identifying and addressing ineffective, inflexible, even destructive patterns of interaction leads to greater satisfaction in relationships. Being able to stand feeling good, an often overlooked problem, is addressed.

Stress management - Finding more effective, constructive ways of dealing with difficulties in love and work relationships is essential. Releasing held-back emotions and learning how to manage expectations of self and others is helpful.

Anger management - Addressing how angry outbursts or sustained resentment occurs and developing healthy expression of and outlets for anger is essential. May include emotional release on the couch.
