Professional statement

Avi Steinhardt is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with two offices in Brooklyn, New York. Drawing from over a decade of clinical experience, he sees clients navigating in a wide range of challenges including anxiety, existential crises, and grief. He especially enjoys working with couples, helping partners better understand and connect with each other.

Having trained at the Gestalt Institute of New England, Avi is an expert in Gestalt Therapy. His approach helps clients to gain self-awareness of the present while exploring the suppressed influence of the past. His office is a safe place to explore the higher questions of meaning, spirituality, identity, loss, and hope.

Avi welcomes clients across the lifespan to his diverse practice. He is excited to meet clients where they are, and to explore together the ways in which who they have been and who they are becoming shapes their narrative.

Message to clients

Though not particularly ‘in fashion’ since the 70s, Gestalt Therapy drew me in because of its existential and humanistic approach, its focus on the here and now, its ability to easily accommodate other interventions, and its assertion that as therapists we can never truly know another's experience.
So instead of analyzing you, I pay attention to what is happening with you in this moment, and invite you to do the same: in therapy, in your relationships, in the choices you make, and the life you are living. It is in this space that change can occur.

Couples counseling - Addressing relationship challenges and life transitions; strengthening communication and feelings of security, desire, connection, and love

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Existential challenges - Supportive exploration of meaning and purpose in one’s life; finding one’s path in the face of existential anxiety, dread, and feelings of meaninglessness

Adult children of alcoholics - Reducing and preventing the negative impact of alcohol use and addictions on physical, emotional, and relational health

Gestalt - Increasing self-awareness for personal growth and developing full potential

Relationships - Understanding one’s wants and needs in relationships; exploring patterns of interaction, addressing concerns, and strengthening satisfaction in relationships and dating
