Professional statement

Carter Thornton is a Licensed Psychoanalyst, Creative Arts Therapist, and Board Certified Music Therapist in Westchester, New York. He specializes in anxiety, depression, and relationship issues.

Carter takes an approach to sessions that is rooted in here-and-now awareness; this often entails grounding practices, such as mind-body connection exercises to quell racing minds, as well as somatic awareness to promote self-regulation and healing. As a creative arts therapist, he also enjoys using expressive tactics like journaling and visual art engagement. He also incorporates music into sessions, depending on client preferences; clients don’t need to have a musical background in order to benefit from the explorative and grounding nature of music therapy with Carter.

With a strong background in psychoanalysis, Carter enjoys exploring clients’ histories and how that might inform their present. He also helps clients develop real-time strategies that they can use in their everyday lives, such as workbooks from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) schools of thought.

Carter has two offices in Westchester, one of which is a classic office setting, and the second which is designed to accommodate creative and expressive modalities. His practice is open to adults across the lifespan, and he looks forward to meeting you.
