Professional statement

Many of my clients feel anxious or lost going through their daily lives, whether it's at work, at home, or within interpersonal relationships. This can manifest as intrusive thinking, depression, feeling disconnected from oneself and others, and having difficulty making change. I specialize in helping clients identify how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all interconnected, as well as looking inside to deepen self-awareness and understanding. I provide feedback, support, and guidance that help clients see into their inner worlds and better understand how they can improve their sense of wellbeing.

My approach to therapy is multifaceted and integrative, ranging from exploring childhood to developing skills to manage current relationships and stress. I take clients through conversations about their past ways of navigating the world and encourage introspection about how they may be connected to the present. I explore the beliefs you may hold about yourself and the world (including spiritual beliefs), as well as more existential questions such as how you make meaning of your life experiences. I am also mindful of providing trauma-informed care for those who’ve previously experienced traumatic or adverse events.

Joey earned his Master’s degree from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychotherapy at Yeshiva University. His goal is to collaborate with his clients to take the necessary steps towards self-improvement, beginning with self-exploration and then building up psychological tools to handle life’s stressors.

Message to clients

Hi! I'm a licensed mental health counselor that specializes in helping clients better manage anxiety, interpersonal issues, and low self-esteem. If you've felt overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in navigating work, relationships, or your path in life, then you know it can be hard figuring out how to make positive change. I specialize in helping clients identify how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all interconnected, so they can start taking control of their lives and accomplish their goals. I provide feedback, support, and guidance that help clients see into their inner worlds and how they can improve their sense of wellbeing.

I start with getting to know what your goals are for therapy and how your past experiences relate to your current struggles. By seeing when and how you learned how to relate to yourself and others, we can identify patterns of thinking and feeling that you’ve developed over time, so they can be changed to help you feel less anxious and more confident. I believe that therapy is a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and exploration. If you’re looking to learn more about your past, present, or how you can pursue your future, therapy is a great place to start. I welcome client input on the therapeutic relationship - in fact I invite it! This is your space and you deserve to speak openly and be respected.

Client testimonials

"Joey Bukai was the only therapist that was on time for our consultation. I did schedule a session with him and felt very comfortable with him. I later felt I needed a female therapist, but I was very happy with his feedback. I truly felt he was good therapist."
