Professional statement

Bessie Fitzgerald is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Hamburg, NY who specializes in seeing adults and adolescents who are struggling with life’s challenges. She has specialized training and focus in the areas of trauma, anxiety issues, depression, and alcohol and substance use.

Bessie’s approach is holistic, eclectic, and mindfully directed. She practices Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), through which clients learn coping skills that can aid them in their daily lives. Clients also learn how to identify cognitive distortions that can lead to negative self-talk, low self-esteem, and low self-worth. She also offers Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which helps clients move past painful, debilitating memories.

Bessie earned a Master’s degree from Walden University. Her services are person-centered and trauma-focused. She strives to create a safe, empathetic environment in each session so clients feel comfortable talking about their thoughts, feelings, and fears. She is non-judgmental and compassionate in her care, empowering clients to put their mental health first and reconnect with a joyful, fulfilling life.

Message to clients

There are times when our minds, our relationships, or our world can present us with challenges that are too difficult to work through and manage on our own. We can find ourselves so focused on what is going on around us that we ignore what is going on inside us.

It takes courage and strength to seek out a therapist and begin the process of exploring your innermost self. I have found myself drawn to working with those committed to addressing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and traumatic experiences. Throughout my life it has been my experience that managing (or not managing!) these types of struggles can feel suffocating and isolating.

I offer a non-judgmental space where we can begin that exploration and you can begin to make yourself a priority. Your story matters, and my goal as a therapist is to compassionately guide you through life’s struggles and help you reach a place where you can embrace your inner strengths and find inner peace.
